As compared with the previous major version 8, Neat Image 9 shows the following speed increase:
- CPU-based processing:
Up to 50% faster.
- GPU-based processing:

- Normal brightness (light colors).
- Reduced brightness (dark colors).
- Auto-detect brightness (match operating system colors).
- Main tabs are now called "Open Input Image", "Prepare Noise Profile", "Adjust and Preview" and "Save Output Image".
- The "Auto Profile" button changes to "Build Profile" when you select an area manually.
- The selection color in Prepare Noise Profile tab has slightly changed:
the blue color of the selection box now means 'profile was built using this area', not 'area was chosen automatically' as before.
- Undo/Redo operations and history of changes for noise profiles.
- Select/drag modes in viewer (useful for computers with touchpads).
- Alt Mouse wheel in viewer zooms to point even when selection is present.
- Improved support for high DPI displays as well as systems with monitors that have different pixel density.
- Ability to toggle alpha channel in viewer (when present).
- Ability to load and save alpha channel when working with TIFF files.
- Preview performance has been optimized.
- Preview cache size adjustment to optimize for different image sizes (Preferences > Performance).
- Additional visual guidance to adjust the GPU memory allowed to Neat Image (Preferences > Performance).
- Numerous minor GUI improvements.
- Improved detection of running applications that may interfere with installation.
- Improved uninstaller with an option to erase settings and license.
- Improved diagnostic data and error reporting.

Note: due to changes in NVIDIA drivers and CUDA Toolkit, GPUs with Compute Capabilities 3.0 are no longer supported. Only GPUs with Compute Capability 3.5 and higher can be utilized by Neat Image 8.6..
- Added support for new AMD GPUs:.
- Radeon RX 5300M / 5500M.
- Radeon RX 5500 / 5500 XT.

- Due to changes in AMD drivers, some older Graphics Core Next 1 GPUs are no longer supported. In particular, Neat Image 8.6 no longer supports most Radeon HD 7xxx / 8xxx cards and other devices based on the following chip series: Cape Verde, Pitcairn, Tahiti. The full list of GPU series supported by Neat Image 8.6 on Windows is: Bonaire, Hawaii, Tonga, Fiji, Ellesmere, Baffin, gfx804, gfx900, gfx901, gfx906, gfx907, gfx1010, gfx1012.
- Several minor bugs have been fixed.

- Detail Recovery function helps to recover fine details that standard filter can not recover.
- Artifact Removal filter to remove speck artifacts (specks are typically introduced by in-camera denoising and compression).
- More accurate profiling of Very Low and Ultra Low frequencies when using small selection.
- Very Low and Ultra Low frequency ranges are now always automatically processed and can be separately adjusted.
